5 Famous Celebrities That Practice Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu is an addictive martial art. Once you start, it’s very difficult to stop. That’s something that all the people on this list have in common. Here are five famous celebrities who practice Jiu-Jitsu.

1. Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy is known for his movies such as “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Bronson” and “Venom”. On top of being an A list actor, Tom is also a pretty good BJJ martial artist. Not only does he train in BJJ, he also regularly competes at a blue belt level.

Tom is said to have started training BJJ for his role as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” but instantly fell in love with the sport so continued after the movie had finished filming.

2. Joe Rogan

Joe Rogan started to train BJJ in the mid 90’s under Jean Jacques Machado who he eventually went on to earn his black belt from.

BJJ isn’t the first black belt Joe Rogan was awarded though as Joe was an active Taekwondo competitor throughout his childhood and early adult years. Rogan puts his extensive knowledge of BJJ to good use when commentating on the UFC.

3. Demi Lovato

Like a lot of other celebrities, Demi Lovato mainly trains through private lessons from her instructors as a way of keeping her private life out of the public eye.

Demi was first awarded her blue belt from the late Orlando Jackson in 2017 after just 1 year of training. This would be considered quick to receive the rank of blue belt but it should be noted that getting one to one lessons from some of the best instructors in the world probably speeds up the process.

Demi, who at one time was in a relationship with ex UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, was awarded her purple belt by Chris Light in early 2023 and continues to train to advance her skills.

4. Justin Bieber

Bieber started his BJJ journey in 2014 under the guidance of the respected BJJ Black belt Rigan Machado. Bieber has never hidden his love for the sport and has posted many times about BJJ to his millions of fans on social media.

He has also spoken publicly about the physical and mental benefits of the martial art and has credited it with keeping him centered both in his personal and professional life.

5. Keanu Reeves

One of the coolest men on the planet, Keanu Reeves has trained in BJJ since the early 2000’s under various members of the Machado family. Keanu tries to keep his personal life separate from his public life as much as he can, therefore it is not known what belt he currently is. However, it’s rumoured that he is still a white belt.

What we do know for sure is that Keanu has used his training many times while filming the John Wick movie franchise much to the delight of BJJ practitioners all over the world.

Conclusion

While there are many more famous faces that compete in Jiu-Jitsu, that completes our list for today of 5 famous Jiu-Jitsu fighters. Tom Hardy, Joe Rogan, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber and Keanu Reeves.
